Skills for Logistics is introducing the logistics industry into the national curriculum. The project has been developed to tackle problems of limited understanding of the industry "across the board" and the industry's aging population, national policy advisor Lesley Broadwood tells Motor Transport. "There is not really an image of logistics from young people," she says.
Funding for the project worth £275,000 comes from the Road Haulage Training and Distribution Council. An independent consultant is working with SfL to develop a working party including at least two teachers, one industry employer and two links from education and business networks which will develop lesson materials and roll out the project.
The three-year project will initially target 14- to 16-year olds by introducing a logistics concept into some of what is taught in key lessons. SfL hopes to roll out the project in September 2007 in 15 North-west schools five of which will be involved in designing the materials alongside the working group.
