Data overload on road charging

12 October 2006

The volume of data being handled by fleets looks set to explode when a national road pricing scheme is introduced, suggests fleet software specialist CFC Solutions. The London Congestion Charging scheme has already seen the amount of data being processed by some fleets increase by around 10%, it says - and further pay-as-you-go schemes can only force a further massive increase in data handling requirements.

"Whatever charging and payment model is used, simply processing invoices will be  a major task," says CFC sales and marketing director Andy Leech. "However, the real challenges will come when managers want to take some control over the road charges incurred. Monitoring the journeys drivers make and the cost in road pricing will be an enormous task." Handling all that data will be a problem for many firms, believes Leech. "There is no question that some fleet managers are already essentially fire fighting the amount of information that is coming into their departments," he says.
