The RHA fears an increase in fuel duty

19 October 2006

Hauliers in Scotland are being urged to make their views on foreign competition and diesel tax known to members of the Scottish parliament, ahead of a debate next Wednesday. The RHA is alerting members to the debate by MSPs on the Scottish Executive's report on the freight sector, which famously says that foreign trucks paying no tax to use UK roads are good for the Scottish economy and consumer.

The RHA is briefing MSPs that this tries to justify unfair competition but the tax difference  is closing firms and taking away jobs in Scotland. Foreign trucks pay 25p/litre less fuel tax and nine countries have still to implement the directive on working time, it says. The RHA fears an increase in fuel duty, that it says will do more damage to both hauleirs and their customers in Scotland.
