'Ridiculous' 40mph limit

02 November 2006

MSPs either supported an increase in the 40mph speed limit on two-lane roads, such as the A9 (Perth to Inverness), or at least were willing to consider an increase. Fergus Ewing, MSP for East Nairn and Lochaber, called for a 50mph limit. "It is ridiculous, trundling along at 40mph. It probably increases the number of accidents - and it does nothing for my blood pressure!"

Paul Martin (Labour) said. "I am not convinced we have the evidence before us to move forward. We should be cautious  but it is an issue that shouldn't be dismissed." Kenny MacAskill (SNP) said it was "totally unfair" that 50% of speeding tickets on the A1 are given to foreign drivers [who don't pay them].

Christine May, Labour, said: "There is a very good case to be made for a [higher] speed limit that is enforced and complied with." Responding, Scotland transport minister Tavish Scott sat neatly on the fence: "I recognise the strength of the arguments on both sides," he said.
