Call to stand up to 'Transport Debate Talibans'

02 November 2006

Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser gave an outspoken plea for more roads, and urged all the major parties to confront the "lunatic fringe" of bodies such as the pressure group, Transform Scotland. Industry needs roads if we are not prepared to build more roads, we fail in our duty to grow the Scottish economy.

"We need to face down the anti-car fanatics I believe that all mainstream parties should have the courage to stand up to these Talibans of the transport debate and say:  "You have simply got it wrong."

Another Tory, David Davidson, said that "many businesses have relocated to the South" because of delays in building a road west of Aberdeen. Maureen Watt, SNP, agreed. "All the hauliers in agriculture, timber, agricultural engineering, oil, agricultural feedstuffs, food and drink - notably whisky - and more are totally frustrated and angry about the lack of progress on that.” The Scottish Executive should do much more, she said.
