Some trailer rental firms are "failing to bite the bullet" and charge sensible rates, Transrent chief Tom Hart says. "I have not seen any substantial change to activity on the ground," he says.
Industry sources suggest that customers know that rates have to rise, but that it takes strong management to increase charges when "airfields full of trailers" are standing idle.
Rental of 13.6m three-axled curtainsiders, with maintenance including tyre wear has been agreed for 2007 at rates as low as £52, sources say. One source quips: "It costs around £8 a week to park up a trailer and you might make a bit more on damages."
