A truck driver killed three people after his mobile phone rang, distracting his attention. Guildford Crown Court heard that Dennis Light, aged 57, swerved then crashed through the central reservation of the A3 when he looked around to find his phone in his untidy cab.
Records showed his mobile phone had received a call at the time of the crash. Light admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for three-and-a-half years. Pressure group Brake gained prominent coverage in tabloid newspapers as saying the sentence was "an insult to those who died" and should have been longer.
