Drink distributor Classic Drinks cites MAN's Euro 4 policy as its key reason for adding 16 new MAN TGLs to its 78-strong fleet. "I just didn't want to mess around with AdBlue, it's as simple as that," says group fleet manager Paul Gaskell, who up until very recently was running an all-Daf and Iveco fleet. "I have got 12 depots, and with AdBlue that will equate to 12 lots of hassle," he says. Gaskell tells MT that he was shocked by the size of the AdBlue tanks on the display vehicles at this year's CV Show. In his opinion they would add too much weight to his "weight-critical operation".
The TGLs, which he describes as "competitively priced", are returning an average of 17mpg. He is happy with this considering they are being used for multidrop work. Although they have manual transmissions, Gaskell says any future purchases may be specified with two pedals. He explains that he didn't want to go down this route yet, just in case they didn't prove to be reliable. "I'll let someone else try them first, and wait for their feedback" he says. The trucks are supplied by MAN ERF Manchester, and are on five-year leases. Gaskell says the order was placed earlier than originally planned in order that they could be fitted with analogue tachos.
