A Yorkshire haulier is accusing police of failing to do their job after being told that an investigation into the theft of his 20,000 tanker was closed within three days. Alexander Peel of AW Peel (Haulage Contractors) says the loss of the tanker is the latest in a string of thefts from his yard in Halifax.
"Surely they can go round the scrapyards looking for it," he says. "All they seem bothered about is catching a few speeders because of the revenue it creates." Peel says he has suffered so many thefts in the past three years that he could end up closing down his business, which dates back to 1912. "The police once recovered two tanker lids," he adds, "but that's the only thing they have recovered in three years."
A spokesman for West Yorkshire police reports that a forensic examination was carried out at Peel's premises following the tanker theft. Officers had also been sent there the previous week after tanker lids, a saw and fuel were reported stolen. "Officers have given the proprietors crime-prevention advice regarding security measures that can be taken to prevent them becoming a victim of crime in the future," he adds.
