Trailer escape firm is fined £2,000

07 December 2006

Transport company WH Bence has been fined £2,000 after a trailer came loose from one of its trucks.

Bence, of Yate, admitted breaching safety regulations.

The trailer smashed into a Volvo car after careering across the A432 Badminton Road.

Police told the court that the steel pin securing the twin-axle trailer to the lorry's towing hitch had not been secured properly, so the pin was not held in by the normal spring locking device.

Managing director James Brown said  at the hearing before North Avon magistrates that the towing hitch had been altered.
