Wieslaw Sawicki was questioned by officers and charged with evasion of excise duty after he picked up an unaccompanied trailer at Hull he planned to take it to markets in Leicestershire.
An inspection of the trailer's contents revealed a coffin-like compartment hidden beneath the trees, in which the stash of cigarettes was stored. Officers estimate the tax evasion on the seizure was £180,000. Sawicki, an ex-policeman in Poland, pleaded guilty at Hull Magistrate's Court and will be sentenced on 8 December.
