The acquisitive TAL Logistics Group has expanded further into the specialist logistics arena by snapping up County Durham-based abnormal loads and general haulier Gallacher Brothers (Haulage). TAL, which bought David Park Transport in Gateshead less than a year ago, began life at the end of 2004 as a holding company to acquire new businesses and create a UK-wide transport and logistics group.
It is focusing on niche markets to differentiate itself from other logistics firms. TAL chief
executive Richard Shaw explains: "Some companies say they are a bit different when really they are offering straightforward logistics, whereas we are after the premium haulage market." The group is now looking at "one or two businesses in the Midlands" as part of its expansion plans, which also include organic growth and extending its range of services.
Gallacher Brothers runs 22 vehicles and employs a workforce of 30. About 60% of its business involves abnormal loads the remainder is general haulage. MD Paddy Gallacher, who ran the business with his brother Michael, is now considering retirement - he believes it is the right time to leave the industry: "What with legislation and health and safety requirements, our costs are getting higher and higher and it's crippling."
Shaw says TAL is rebranding Gallacher Brothers as TAL Gallachers, but he has "no immediate plans" to change the business.
