Tories want to get back on the escalator

07 December 2006

The Conservative Party wants to re-introduce the fuel duty escalator, front bench spokesman Damien Green said last week.

And Steve Norris, chairman of the transport group on the Conservative Party's Quality of Life Commission said he thought it a 'tragedy' that the UK government dropped the escalator "just when it was beginning to work" as a way of tackling climate change.

Norris was chief executive of the RHA when Gordon Brown escalated fuel duty at inflation plus 6% in his  first budget. His view then was the hauliers had got off lightly and should re-coup the extra cost form their customers in higher rates.
