Limited time left for 7.5t

14 December 2006

Many operators have just two weeks to fit speed limiters to their 7.5-tonners to avoid running illegally. As from January 1, almost every commercial vehicle with a GVW of more than 3.5 tonnes that was registered between October 1, 2001, and December 31, 2004, will need to be limited to 56mph. The legislation applies to roughly 60,000 vehicles that were previously able to do 70mph on the motorway. According to the FTA there are a handful of exceptions, including Ford Transits. VOSA was unable to  confirm how it would deal with non-conformers but non-compliance is expected to be a failure item at annual test. In January 2008 the legislation will be expanded to include vehicles registered on or after January 1, 2005.
