Tesco's announcement that it will run 2,000 trucks on a 50:50 biodiesel blend from this month has caused a surge in demand for the fuel. "Our phones just haven't stopped ringing," says a spokeswoman for UK-based Greenergy, which is the sole supplier of biodiesel to Tesco. "A lot of UK fleets were sitting on the fence, wondering if there was a risk associated with it. But the news that Tesco will run most of its fleet on biodiesel must have convinced a lot of people that the fuel is alright."
But Greenergy, which is part-owned by Tesco, is currently unable to cope with demand. Its UK plant only started full production this week and initial supplies are destined for Tesco. However it is confident that after two or three months it will be in a position to supply other major UK fleets, at which point it will "follow up all of the commercial enquiries received."
