Scania to offer Euro 5 EGR in 2007

11 January 2007

Scania will be the first manufacturer to offer a Euro 5 engine without the need for selective catalytic reduction (SCR), as it begins to introduce its new EGR engine platform later this year. The new engines will feature XPI common-rail - the injection system it has developed jointly with Cummins. The new technology is likely to be rolled out to the 12-litre engines first, which currently use the HPI system. The V8 engines will be the last to get XPI and are likely to be offered solely with SCR  until 2009.

According to Hasse Johansson, Scania's group vice president, research and development, the new engines "will meet Euro 5 without any fuel penalty". Meanwhile MAN, which also favours in-cylinder emission control, is unable to confirm a date of introduction for its Euro 5 EGR engines. A spokesman tells Motor Transport that "it will be introduced in time for Euro 5".
