Thursday 11 January 2007 12:00

Cumbria Police are conducting an investigation for the coroner into an accident in which an off-duty policeman was killed while driving a truck.

PC Steven Robertson, who worked for Tayside Police, was on the M6 near Penrith when the accident happened. He is understood to have been driving as an agency driver for a parcel delivery firm.

Robertson was in the Road Policing Unit; he was a specialist driving instructor although he was off work as medically unfit at the time of the accident.

Tayside police said in a statement that Robertson "thrived as a police driver" and that he had a "patient and calm temperament".

Robertson, who was married to another officer serving with Tayside Police, also leaves a five-year-old daughter.
