Electric 7.5t hits London streets

18 January 2007

The congestion charge-beating Smith Newton 7.5-tonner, operating out of TNT Express' Barking depot, will make about 60 drops a day on its 40-mile round-trip. Driver Steve Pyner swaps an Iveco Eurocargo for the Newton. He praises his new truck's relaxed driving style, the regenerative braking and the automatic transmission. "I'm on and off the clutch all day, so this is really going to save my left leg," he says. Pyner dismisses fears that pedestrians might not notice its stealth-like approach.  "People in the city walk out in front of you all the time anyway, and nothing is going to change that. You'd think they'd notice a big orange lorry, wouldn't you?" he quips.
