Simpson praises Euro 4/5 Volvos

25 January 2007

Sheffield-based RW Simpson's Euro 4 and Euro 5 Volvo FH tractors are 7.5% more fuel efficient than the Euro 3s it purchased last year.

"I'm getting 8.5mpg and that's running fully freighted at least 70% of the time," explains MD David Simpson, who runs 17 Euro 4 FHs and one Euro 5 FH.

But he says there doesn't seem to be any difference in  fuel economy between the two, adding that he was hoping the Euro 5 truck would be slightly more efficient than the Euro 4s. This hasn't put him off his decision to buy only Euro 5 trucks from now on due to his optimism that the government will eventually offer incentives for the cleanest trucks.

The SCR-equipped Euro 4s and Euro 5 Volvos are consuming AdBlue at a rate of between 3 and 4% of diesel usage - which equates to 35 litres per truck per week. The company bulk buys the urea solution for 26p per litre and has an IBC dispenser at each of its sites. Simpson says there have been no operational problems with AdBlue.
