Tesco will be the first company to run a fleet of zero-emission Modec electric vehicles, having placed an order for 15 of the panel vans. They go on the road in April and will be used for home deliveries from a new timber-constructed green superstore in Shrewsbury.
Modec has already received orders for 100 of its vans from 30 different companies and expects to sell 500 units in 2007. The panel van (pictured) appeals to supermarkets and parcels companies while the dropside version has attracted a lot of interest from the construction sector.
Sales and marketing director Geoff Reyner says the highest demand is in the South-east, where the congestion charge exemption acts as a further incentive.
The Modec van has a range of over 100 miles, a top speed of 70mph, and according to Reyner is the first electric vehicle to get a speeding ticket. It has been framed and is hanging in Modec's Coventry HQ.
