Minister confirms 'bird flu' transport safety

07 February 2007

Environment secretary David Miliband was forced to address safety concerns about the transport of thousands of turkey carcasses from Bernard Matthews' Lowestoft plant to a rendering plant in Staffordshire in the wake of the bird flu outbreak.

A spokesman for Staffordshire MP Bill Cash says: "We have had assurances from Miliband that the trailers are secure." Cash had written to Miliband when local constituents expressed concerns about the security of the vehicles.

John Pointon  & Sons, which transported the carcasses to the rendering plant in Cheddleton, Staffordshire, says all its trailers have solid doors that are double sealed with air clamping mechanisms. The reinforced high density flexible sheeting is secured with a high tension ratcheted fastening system fully approved by DEFRA. The company says that all the trailers used are individually tested every time they leave the company's premises.
