Blair plugs in to electric vehicles

08 February 2007

Attending the official opening of Smith Electric Vehicle's new Washington plant last week, prime minister Tony Blair said: "This will be a company that will really make its presence felt not just in the North East, but actually throughout the world." His visit coincided with the news that Marks & Spencer is to be the first major retailer to run a Smith Newton vehicle, with a view to rolling-out more electric vehicles across its urban delivery fleet. Ian Mumby, head of food logistics and supply  chain at M&S, says: "We recently announced Plan A, our 100-point eco-plan, which will see us become carbon-neutral within five years. Zero emission vehicles such as the Newton, could potentially play a large roll in helping us meet that commitment."
