Plans to introduce congestion charging in Manchester have moved a step closer following the backing of a report proposing a scheme by 2012.
Bosses of 10 local councils which make up the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) are understood to have given the report the thumbs-up.
But a spokeswoman for Manchester City Council stresses that although the council leaders have "agreed to look at this" the scheme would have to pass AGMA's "ten hurdles" before getting the go-ahead. These include having an efficient public transport system in place, says the spokeswoman. She adds that no charges have been decided, although figures of £6 a day for a car driver to get in and out of Manchester have been widely reported.
The spokeswoman says the system could involve satellite technology on 15 roads or "corridors". "This is an organic thing and will evolve," she adds.
