Cemex owner-drivers hit out at pay deal

20 February 2007

Hundreds of UK owner-drivers working for Mexican cement giant Cemex are "seriously considering industrial action", says former general secretary of the National Owner Drivers Association Mick Binns.

Binns says he represents more than 300 drivers who are concerned about Cemex's decision to unilaterally introduce a rate increase despite rejection.

The drivers are also concerned about not being paid properly or on time self-billing accounts that arrive late or not at all and a move  to a 'squarial' system from being paid on a radial mile basis, which can mean drivers travel further for less money.

A Cemex spokesperson says: "We are aware of the issues regarding payments to independent hauliers. A new payment system is being introduced and we are dealing with any concerns on an individual basis. This involves payments on account."
