Jobs risk as drinks contract moves from Bibby to K+N

20 February 2007

Up to 140 jobs at Bibby Distribution could be at risk following a decision by brewing giant Anheuser-Busch to switch its drinks distribution to Kuehne + Nagel.

Bibby Distribution confirmed last week that the loss of the contract, which runs until June 24, affects sites at Bicester Park, Buckingham, Glasgow and Belfast.

A Bibby spokesperson says: "During the next few weeks, Bibby and KN Drinks Logistics will be discussing the implications of this decision with the individuals involved  at each of these sites."

It is understood that Bibby is trying to either secure a new contract at Bicester or to lease out the site.

The TGWU is concerned about the Bibby staff because Kuehne + Nagel's drinks operation - KN Drinks Logistics - has indicated that it does not intend to use the Bicester site.

As Motor Transport went to press TGWU regional industrial organiser Adrian Jones said an informal meeting with local union representatives was taking place this week. Discussions with Bibby were also planned.

"We are trying to contact Kuehne + Nagel to set up a meeting urgently," says Jones. "It's unconfirmed but this should be a TUPE arrangement, but because KN Drinks Logistics isn't using any of the sites in the region ultimately it does not look promising for TGWU members. This is devastating news for our members and for Bicester."

K+N declined to comment on the job situation. As part of the new contract it will be responsible  for all Anheuser-Busch brands in the UK which include Budweiser, Bud Silver, Bud Ice, Michelob, Michelob Ultra and Harbin.
