Skills for Logistics has welcomed the DSA's proposed guidelines for the Driver CPC, but says they could have been "more dynamic".
"Here we're really only dealing with periodic training. We hoped it would be a genuine training directive, an opportunity for new drivers to train" says chief executive Ian Hetherington.
The sector skills council says it is "extremely pleased" that DSA has moved on the proposals to offer freight companies an opportunity to carry out driving tests, but Hetherington adds that he does not forecast a "mass market" in the near future. SfL is working on a pilot of a group of companies that "can get together and have a testing centre at a location which is strategically convenient", and that DSA has agreed to provide a tester.
Hetherington notes SfL's "disappointment" at the DCQ, saying that it had hoped an integrated code to register a qualification on current driving licences could be adopted. "It's another piece of card that people are likely to lose," he says, adding that he is hopeful that SfL will help get rid the proposed £25 issue fee.
Hetherington advises that operators familiarise themselves with the regulated curriculum. "It will enable them to be more discriminating when talking to providers".
