Tyneside-based Quayside Frozen Foods has started specifying Michelin XFN2 anti-splash tyres on the front and steered third axles of its refrigerated 26-tonne 6x2 Volvo FM9s.
Transport manager Peter McDermott says his drivers have noticed, not only a reduction in spray, with less dirt thrown up on to the vehicles' yellow livery, but an increase in grip in wet and slushy conditions, to the benefit of braking efficiency.
He adds that XFN2 tyres were initially fitted by the local branch of ATS Euromaster to one vehicle on a trial basis. The results were sufficiently positive for them to be specified on steer-axles across the fleet of eight Volvo 26-tonners, each covering up to 100,000km a year.
