Parliamentary group backs biofuels

Wednesday 28 February 2007 12:00

A cross-party group of MPs and peers has been launched to promote the potential of renewable fuels for LGVs.

The All Party Parliamentary Renewable Transport Fuels Group aims to help the transport sector cut its carbon dioxide emissions. A spokesman explains: "The group is there to raise the profile of renewable fuels, though it does not have any decision making powers. Non-Parliamentarians are welcome to join the group and we are already getting applications in at a decent rate. One of our members is the Freight Transport Association."

Paddy Tipping MP chairs the group, which hopes to improve communication between opinion formers, policy makers and other parties that have an interest in renewable fuels. The official launch will take place on 7 March in the House of Commons, focusing on the biofuels sector.

Tipping says: "A successful biofuels industry has the potential to create important opportunities for UK business and the rural economy, and increase the security of the fuel supply."

Group secretary Adrian Wilkes, chairman of the Environmental Industries Commission, adds: "Biofuels offer one solution and it is therefore vital that there is a proper forum for Parliamentarians to discuss the potential of biofuels."
