Gerry Jones builds on past quarter century

15 March 2007

South Wales haulier Gerry Jones Transport is celebrating 25 years in business with plans to build a new 3,000m2 warehouse at its Crosskeys, Gwent site.

The 50-truck firm moved to nearby Cwmcarn four years ago but still uses the old site for trailer parking and storage. It has submitted plans to the local authority to demolish the existing buildings and build a new warehouse, which will include an 18m x 44m loading canopy.

It hopes to be able to start work on the £750,000  project, subject to planning permission, in the next three months, with the warehouse operational by the end of the year.

Boss Gerry Jones says he has approached various government bodies for funding only to be rejected: "I started 25 years ago and have never had a penny off anyone so asking went a bit against the grain. But they have told us that we are not an industry that they are looking to assist."

The firm has also ordered two new XXL-cabbed MAN TGA tractor units with 5-Star cab finish as fleet replacements.
