A small group of haulage companies are overtaking the larger players in terms of profits and sales, says business analyst Plimsoll Publishing.
These "lean, fit and relatively small" businesses include BP Mitchell Haulage Contractors and Fernwood Transport.
Plimsoll says these firms are increasing sales at three times the rate of their larger competitors, delivering four times their profitability and showing five times the return on investment.
Plimsoll points to high salary bills which eat up 31% of sales. Senior analyst at the company, David Pattison says: "There is always a belief that the bigger companies can obtain economies of scale, can buy much more competitively and can pick up return loads but that is not always the case."
