Euro 4 trucks may have residuals penalty

23 March 2007

Euro 4 SCR-equipped trucks currently have a 3% residual value penalty over equivalent Euro 3 vehicles, according to industry guide CAP Monitor. However it sees Euro 4 EGR trucks as being worth the same as Euro 3. Glass's Guide chief editor of commercial vehicles George Alexander has a slightly different point of view. While he agrees with the 3% figure for SCR, he says Euro 4 EGR trucks also have a penalty over Euro 3 - albeit just 1%.

But Alexander stresses that the difference between  EGR and SCR values will be short-lived, and is convinced that these figures will level-out over the next couple of years. He believes that in the long run the residuals will come down to things like fuel economy and the brand pedigree rather than the technologies used to reach the latest round of emissions levels.

"It is a shame that the argument between EGR and SCR has gone this far. Truck buyers shouldn't have to be involved in the technology argument," he says.
