Schools across England and Scotland will pilot a programme this autumn to raise awareness of the logistics industry for 14- to16 year-olds.
Skills for Logistics is developing its 'School's Programme' software, which it hopes will enable pupils to get to grips with supply chain logistics by incorporating concepts such as the distribution of iPods into maths lessons. SfL says it is the first time that resources have been produced for the purpose of teaching logistics in schools.
The software is being developed in 30 schools across North-west England, the East Midlands and Scotland. The schools will provide feedback to help to refine the software and ensure its relevance and value is maintained.
Lucinda Ward, SfL marketing and communications director, says: "It will be something that's in-built within the maths curriculum. We thought if we were going to try and go for gold it might as well be something everyone has to do."
Funding for the project comes from the Road Haulage Distribution Council - £273,000 over three years.
