Volvo will launch a new EGR-equipped engine in September. The new 13-litre, which will only be available in Euro 4 guise, was originally developed for the American market. It will be 40kg lighter than the D12F EGR engine it replaces, and will be offered in both the FM (360hp, 400hp and 440hp) and FH (400hp, 440hp and 500hp).
Although Volvo is fully committed to SCR in Europe, a spokesman explains that it offers both technologies as a small number of customers prefer EGR. He says they tend to be rental companies, tipper operators who struggle to find space on the chassis for a urea tank, petrol tanker operators and hauliers operating in remote areas where AdBlue availability is an issue.
