JDR plans pallet move

12 April 2007

JDR Distribution is launching a one-stop shop targeting pallet deliveries in the Midlands, as part of its move away from haulage into consolidation and distribution. Pallet-Link will operate from the 270,000sq ft Tamworth depot that JDR manages for its customer DSV, as a "pay as you go" 24-hour service where pallets destined for the Midlands and surrounding areas can be dropped into the hub and delivered by JDR's vehicles.

JDR charges operators for the delivery of the pallet, with no cross-dock  or hub costs. MD Jarrod Baughn is quick to point out that Pallet-Link is not a pallet network - but concedes that "those [networks] that make a living off the hub activity per pallet are going to see us as a terrible threat," adding: "I'm not after anyone's business, just their volumes." He says Pallet-Link means that JDR and other operators can "sweat their assets", and "it will stop operators travelling so far".

Operators in discussion with JDR include Van Hee Transport, Ranger Transport and Widdowsons.
