Plans mooted by authorities in Calais to open a new refugee centre five years after the closure of Sangatte may reignite the problem of illegal immigrants attempting to enter the UK by hiding in trucks.
RHA head of international affairs, Peter Cullum, says he recently discussed potential problems with police and port authorities in Calais.
He says: "Numbers of clandestines have reduced significantly, from 10,000-12,000 to 1,500, and so that's a good thing. The worry is this will be a focus for clandestines again.
"If it is we will let the French authorities know pretty quickly. We are quite content that the French authorities are doing their best to square this circle, but we will just have to wait and see."
Don Armour, FTA's head of international services, warns that the plans to open the centre by November could see a "return to the old days. This could attract immigrants to Calais like bees to a honeypot."
