Ford offers 200hp engine in the Transit

25 April 2007

Ford has added a new 200hp engine option to the Transit range in a bid to offer improved journey times to long-haul customers and a new high-speed offer to the blue-light emergency services.

The new engine, which will be available in all Transit rear-wheel-drive applications, is a five-cylinder derivative of the current four-pot offering. The 3.2-litre engine is built in Turkey and as well as offering the colossal new power rating has a torque output of 470Nm.

To accommodate the new engine the 200hp Transit’s are equipped with a new grille and bumper and a six-speed transmission is required, there also some changes to the suspensions necessary to accommodate the extra power and torque. The new engine benefits from Ford’s 50,000km/2-year service intervals.

One obvious application for the new power unit is the latest top-rated Transit, now available with a higer gross vehicle weight, up from 4.25t to 4.6t. As well as the additional power, both axles have been strengthened for this application to accommodate a 1,850kg front axle and a 3,300kg rear unit. To cope with the higher weights larger rear brake callipers are employed as are uprated rear springs and revised front and rear damper settings.
