Beet haulier regroups after sugar plant closure

27 April 2007

Haulier Ed Weetman has been forced to "regroup" following the closure of two British Sugar factories at York and Telford.

The company lost work delivering between 40 and 50 loads a day for Trident Feeds from the sugar beet factories when the plants at Allscott, near Telford, and one near York, closed recently.

Ed Weetman is now increasingly moving away from bulk tipper haulage to focus on the more specialist bulk discharge work, using bulk blower vehicles to service contracts for  local feed mills.

Owner Ed Weetman says that "some jobs were lost" as a result of the closures and adds the company is selling a number of artics and trailers at auction at the end of the month.

"This came out of the blue and unfortunately there were a few driver redundancies," says Weetman. "We have tried to find drivers other employment and if we manage to replace the lost work then there will be jobs to offer them."
