Fly-tippers plead guilty to 28,000 tonnes

30 April 2007

Police have welcomed guilty pleas from two men, one a licensed operator, following the illegal dumping of 28,000 tonnes of waste in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Cyril McGuinness of Derrylyn, Fermanagh, and haulier Cormac McCaffrey of Maguiresbridge, Fermanagh, admitted to 44 charges of fly-tipping when they appeared at Dungannon Crown Court.

The prosecution followed a two-year investigation into offences which were committed in 2003/2004. Sentencing will take place later this  year.

In 2005, Euroskips, a company of which McGuinness and McCaffrey were directors, was fined £27,500 for keeping and disposing of controlled waste in a way not in accordance with a waste management licence.
