NFT search for key RDC growth

03 May 2007

Chilled consolidation specialist NFT Distribution is targeting the management of regional distribution centres (RDCs) as a key area of business growth.

At present the Alfreton-based firm has only one RDC-type business on its books, running a chilled, ambient and produce order picking operation for Sainsbury's from its St Albans site.

NFT Distribution was divested from its former parent company Northern Foods in a management buy-out last August. David Frankish, NFT managing director  (above), says that ownership by Northern Foods effectively ruled out RDC investment as it "wasn't really interested in sheds, just transport" and the major retailers believed that NFT had no desire to run RDCs.

However with private-equity backing that has changed says Frankish: "We have got all that expertise [in running St Albans] and sustainable growth from there would be to take on another RDC in the next year or two.

"It's an eminently achievable target and I think we'd do a good job."

The firm also hopes to invest in a new 100,000sq ft warehouse in the next 18 months.
