Illegal waste transport: Birmingham man faces fine

09 May 2007

A truck driver has become the first person to be prosecuted under Birmingham Council's crackdown on the illegal transport of waste.

Martin Chick, of Selly Oak, was fined £200 with £150 costs by Birmingham magistrates after failing to register with the Environment Agency (EA) as a waste carrier.

Operation Cleansweep was launched a few weeks ago after the agency warned that too many haulage firms were dumping waste illegally. Operators were ordered to register waste-carrying activities  with the agency.

Chick's vehicle was carrying scrap metal when it was stopped by EA officials in Birmingham - Chick claimed he was moving waste from his garden. The name of his haulage company was not disclosed.

EA officer Gillian Lloyd says: "Waste carriers must register with the agency as it is unfair on the haulage firms that comply with the law and pay the registration costs."
