Kent County Council is to meet transport minister Stephen Ladyman on May 17 to discuss the possibility of a vast lorry park being built to replace the congestion-easing Operation Stack system. "We want to plan a way forward to this park," says Mick Sutch, head of planning and transport strategy at the council which has drawn up a shortlist of sites along the M20 which could be converted into a park for four thousand vehicles.
VOSA has also expressed an interest in using the site for carrying out road-worthiness checks of vehicles coming out of Dover port. Another idea to be mooted at the meeting, which will also involve Kent Police but not VOSA, will be a "quick moveable barrier" system which will enable lanes to be kept open on the M20 and take away the need to filter traffic onto nearby A and country roads. "This would give us a better arrangement in the short-term," adds Sutch.
