Eurotunnel, which carried its 12 millionth truck on its shuttle service last week, is ploughing money into improving parking and drivers' facilities in Coquelles, France.
Long-standing customer Nottingham-based RH Freight was named as the operator of the 12 millionth lorry to use Eurotunnel's freight shuttle since it began in July 1994. The news came hand-in-hand with the announcement of a £1m investment in new infrastructure at the entrance to Coquelles' terminal. This will include more parking space and better drivers' facilities.
Recent improvements to the freight service include a new self-service check-in for drivers who can now use a touch screen to confirm details of bookings and loads such as whether the vehicle is carrying dangerous goods. A spokesman for Eurotunnel says: "For regular drivers this can take 20 or 30 seconds to do instead of up to a minute and a half."
Eurotunnel shuttles carried 1.3 million trucks in 2006 and almost 350,000 in the first quarter of 2007 - 11% more than in the same period of 2006. Driver Ian Ecob from RH Freight says: "RH probably uses the tunnel around 450 times a week. It is definately the most reliable service for a driver like me."
