Big deals for Axis

17 May 2007

Truck and trailer contract-hire group Axis Intermodal has signed a £3.5m deal to supply operators including Bulmers Logistics and Freightliner with more than 250 trailers. Axis MD Ernie Clemson says the agreement is its largest in the UK since the company was established in 1994. Bulmers Logistics is taking 140 trailers over five years at a cost of £2.5m rail logistics specialist Freightliner has ordered 21 purpose-built trailers over seven years as part of an investment in its road services operation.

Axis has also won a contract with "a leading express deliveries courier service" to provide 50 trailers these and a number of smaller deals take the total to 250 trailers.

The manufacturer's German-based business has won orders for 1,500 swap bodies to be delivered during 2007. These orders are one symptom of the booming Germany economy, which has contributed to growing lead times across Europe. Clemson adds: "We were either lucky or had a bit of foresight. Being close to the European trailer market we were aware of the situation last year. We decided to order in advance - we thought that if we bought and had a commitment from manufacturers we would be ahead of the game."
