Euro-4/5 confusion will cut truck sales'

21 May 2007

Confusion over which trucks are best equipped to meet new emissions limits means that sales of LGVs will drop by 10% this year, according to the publisher of Glass's Guide. George Alexander, chief commercial vehicle editor at EurotaxGlass, reports that operators are delaying purchases because they are unclear about which trucks to buy.

He says: "We now have three camps battling it out for the hearts, minds and cash of those operators who by now must be thoroughly confused about how to best  run their fleet - let alone save the planet.

"There is now EGR, SCR, and SCR with the reduced pollution certificate (RPC) scheme to choose between, in addition to determining whether to stay at Euro-4 or go to Euro-5." Alexander argues that clear guidelines should have been set out by the government more than two years ago. And he concludes: "The way this administration has made life difficult for road haulage by interpreting EU rules in an inconsistent manner shows just how little they care about our industry."
