Putting fuel bills under pressure

23 May 2007

Teesside-based Bulmer Logistics is cutting its fuel bills by regularly checking tyre pressures. The company has built regular pressure checks into its maintenance and tyre contracts and has added this task to staff duties at depots. The projected saving of 0.15mpg would translate to £183,000 a year across its 244-strong fleet. MD Jonathan Bulmer says when the firm came to renew its tyre contracts its discovered that many of its tyres were running at incorrect pressures: "They ranged between 50%  under-inflated and 20% over-inflated. Lots of the over-inflated ones were in new trucks." The initiative is part of a range of efficiency measures by Bulmers, including extensive driver training.
