United Pallet Network (UPN) says that it has increased the number of pallets it moves by an average 100 a night since the network launched its new Micro Pallet service. Chairman Martyn Chapman says the network had considered introducing the Micro Pallet operation - unique to UPN - for the past 18 months. "We felt there was a gap in the marketplace," he says.
UPN launched the operation on May 7, on the back of online trading growth which has spurred demand for a service to bridge the gap between parcel and palletised freight, it says. Customers are able to ship pallets of up to 150 kilos to anywhere in the UK on a next-day or timed service for around 25% less than the cost of a quarter pallet.
Since the launch, the highest increase of pallets in one night has been 135, Chapman tells Motor Transport. UPN is currently shifting an average 2,000 pallets a night, but "with the members that are joining, we're looking at around 3,000 by the busy time in the run-up to Christmas," he says.
