EC considers cross-border enforcement

Thursday 31 May 2007 12:00

The European Commission is looking to get agreement from all member states to share information across enforcement agencies.

At present when a driver is stopped in a foreign country there is no official process in place to ensure that any prohibition is communicated to the enforcement agency in their home country.

This can result in serial offenders being going unpunished in the long run.

But at a joint International Road Transport Union (IRU) and Freight Transport Association conference in Brussels yesterday (30 May) EC director of inland transport Enrico Grillo Pasquarelli said he hoped to have something in place to address the situation by the end of December 2010.

Richard Turner, chairman at the FTA, welcomed the EC’s action, although he described the timetable as ambitious.

“If someone is a repeat offender in a foreign country, the home country’s enforcement agency should be able to help ensure the driver receives a suitable prohibition.”
