15% increase in Suffolk truck crashes

01 June 2007

The number of LGV accidents on roads in Suffolk has increased substantially, says a new report. The Suffolk Road Safety Board has released figures which show 156 crashes in the county during 2006, the highest since 1990 and 15% higher than 2005.

But while the actual accident figures are up, the number of people killed or seriously injured has dropped. Councillor Guy McGregor, Suffolk County Council's portfolio holder  for road safety described the results as "startling" but added:

"We are going to get a grip on all these accidents and find out where the HGVs were registered, what hours they had driven and the causes of the accidents. We are working closely with the Highways Agency."

Suffolk Road Safety Board is a multi-agency organisation set up to reduce road casualties.
