Enviro Technology Services reckons it has the solution to policing the London Low Emission Zone. The air pollution monitoring specialist has developed a system that measures exhaust emissions as vehicles drive through a beam of ultraviolet light.
Operations director Duncan Mounsor says: "Traditional methods of monitoring pollution involving stopping a vehicle and attaching a sensor directly to the exhaust pipe are inefficient and inconvenient, and are less effective in helping to implement a Low Emission Zone.
"These remote sensing devices (RSDs) enable the effective enforcement of Low Emission Zones." The RSDs analyse vehicle emissions by measuring how much light the molecules of the individual pollutants absorb. An Enviro spokesman adds: "This system can measure any level of pollution, from high emitting vehicles to low emitting vehicles.
"It is also quite popular with some fleet operators in America, which use it as a tool to check that their vehicles are running as they should."
