A new solution has been developed to combat the problem of soot clogged diesel particulate filters (DPF) when run on low-temperature operations - a problem that particularly affects multi-drop work.
Zircotec, a company which supplies the nuclear industry and several Formula One racing teams, says its plasma-sprayed zirconia ceramic coating method, which is applied to exhaust manifolds, downpipes and catalyst cans can dramatically reduce heat loss.
That helps maintain the temperature in the catalyst at a level necessary to burn off the accumulated soot. Zircotec's technical director Andy McCabe points out that DPF-equipped urban delivery vehicles using EGR to achieve Euro 4 compliance are particularly susceptible to filter clogging.
